Have you heard the phrase work to live vs. live to work? There are countries that have the mentality and culture of working to live. They actually take their time drinking a cup of coffee (and not in a to go cup). When we visited Paris my daughters wanted to try their Starbucks and see the difference. The Starbucks on the Champs-Elysées Ave. serves all of their drinks in porcelain and glass, you have to specifically have to ask for a to go cup.
Lunches and dinners are to be enjoyed by the senses and not eaten at a desk with the computer on and the phone in hand. Work starts later and people go out after work to relax and meet friends vs. rushing home to do housework. We need down time to do nothing, that means no phone, TV, or anything else. Just spending time outdoors or at home relaxing. Our nervous system needs it. We are all on over drive, stressed out, burned out, sick and unhappy with life.
While our culture is not there yet, we can create more balance in our daily lives.
Here's How:
1- What are the most important/fun things for you?calendar
make a list of up to 5 things that light you up and give you life force.
2- Use a calendar and schedule in your must dos then add in your fun things that light you up ( me time, family, friends, work, pets). Your "me time" can be anything for example: doing nothing, working out, yoga, sewing, art, reading, drinking coffee at a sidewalk cafe, you pick.
3- Resist the urge to scroll the phone endlessly, set a timer and get off. Be present in your life and feel what you're feeling.
4- For the next 2 weeks notice yourself and what you're spending your time. Then figure out what needs less of your attention ( tires you out in a bad way) and what fun things can you add in.
