The Power of Scent and How it Shapes the Feeling of Your Home and Business.

Have you ever noticed how certain smells can take you back in time? A scent that brings you happiness, or one that reminds you of a stressful time in your life?
Smell has always been one of my strongest senses. It has served me well, although sometimes it can put me over the edge.
When I think of a happy scent, I immediately think of Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil straight out of the '80s. It had a deep coconut smell that, to this day, takes me back to Sun-In in my hair, trips to the beach, wine coolers, and lying by the pool with my friends, laughing and talking about boys. (We used to lie out in the sun without sunscreen, and the Hawaiian Tropic we used had an SPF of 4.)
To this day, the smell of coconut and vanilla brings me back to a time of carefree happiness.
Of course, the opposite can be true, too. A particular scent can transport us back to a stressful experience or a place we'd rather forget.
The Scent of a Space
Think about walking into a business, a hotel, or someone's home. Before you even take in the design and aesthetic, you may notice how the space smells—and how that smell makes you feel.
Recently, I walked into a Williams Sonoma store, and the scent was absolutely delicious. Apples, cinnamon, and other inviting aromas made the entire shopping experience that much more fun.
Some hotels in Europe have signature scents. You walk into the lobby, and the fragrance is divine. Everything smells fresh and clean, creating an atmosphere that feels luxurious and memorable. Sometimes, a scent can even leave you feeling nostalgic.
Sadly, earlier this year, my family and I stayed in the cutest vacation rental. The house was literally darling, but unfortunately, it had a scent that was anything but charming. It smelled like cat food, cat litter, and a cat box all mixed together!
The house was spotless, but the smell lingered. Unfortunately, that is the memory that stayed with me, too.
It made me think about how much scent contributes to our experience of a space. We can spend time decorating, organizing, and making a home or business look beautiful, but if something doesn't smell right, it can change how we feel about the entire environment.
From a Feng Shui perspective, creating a supportive space involves more than what we see. It's also about how we experience a space through our senses and how that environment makes us feel.
How to Make Your Home or Business Smell Fresh and Inviting:
The good news is that you don't need an expensive signature fragrance to create a pleasant environment. Start with the basics.
1. Keep things clean.
Clean as you go rather than waiting for a designated cleaning day. If something is dirty or has an unpleasant smell, address it as soon as possible. Pay attention to trash cans, compost, drains, upholstery, and other places where odors can linger.
2. Open the windows when cooking.
Ventilation helps prevent cooking odors from settling into your home. Use your range hood fan when available.
3. Air out your home or workspace daily.
When outdoor air quality and weather conditions allow, open windows and doors to refresh the space and bring in fresh air. Just like us our indoor spaces need to have fresh air.
4. Store food properly.
Use airtight containers for leftovers, clean out your refrigerator regularly, and dispose of food before it begins to spoil.
5. Give your pets some extra attention.
Wash pet beds and food bowls regularly. Clean litter boxes and animal enclosures frequently, and address accidents promptly with an appropriate cleaner. Baking soda may help absorb some odors, but always use a cleaner suitable for the surface and the type of mess.
Bring Nature Into Your Space
Once you've addressed the source of unwanted odors, you can explore natural ways to make your home smell inviting.
I enjoy using essential oils diluted in a proper diffuser. Lemongrass and vanilla (if possible Organic) is delightful. In the winter I also love simmering fresh rosemary, sliced lemons or oranges, and cinnamon sticks in a pot of water on the stove. The fragrance feels warm, comforting, and seasonal.Always keep an eye on anything simmering on the stove, and be mindful that essential oils and strong fragrances may affect people with sensitivities, as well as pets. Choose scents and methods that are appropriate for everyone sharing your space.
What Does Your Space Smell Like?
Our sense of smell is powerful. It can awaken memories, influence our moods, and shape our first impressions of a place.
